SINBI (RAWAI, PHUKET, THAILAND)
How long is the highest-level, publicly available training session a gym has to offer (excluding invite-only or sponsored fight team training)?
2+ hours
How many rounds of pads do you get with a Kru per training session?
5 Rounds
How often can you train clinching?
Every Session
How often can you spar?
Everyday
What is the approximate number of students per session?
Low end: 50
High end: 100 (so I'm told)
Average 75
Approximately how many Krus are on the floor during a training session?
25
Student-to-Coach Ratio
3:1
Are training sessions mostly self-guided, uniform, or choose your own adventure?
Choose Your Own Adventure... Everyone gets 5 rounds of pads, but you choose between bag work and sparring or clinching (25 mins straight) and technical drills almost every session. If your training for a fight, they give you more strength and conditioning at the end (300 knees, 100 push ups, 300 crunches, extra road work, etc.)
Quality of Facility (1-10 scale)
9.5 out of 10, the place is huge - could easily accommodate 100+ students with 3 rings, 60 bags, and plenty of mat space. Everything clean. Excited to show up every day. Only wish there was a little more variety in heavy bags and the weight room got a little updating. Boxing gloves available (and required) for boxing sparring, but otherwise you bring your own gear. Accommodations available 2 blocks from gym with daily cleaning service and comfortable beds, but pretty pricey for area -- maybe worth the money if you want a turnkey experience. If I had to be super nit-picky, only complaints would be that they don't accept cards for payments and don't carry any cleaning solution for gloves and shinnies in their store (pick up at the 7-11 around the corner instead).
Your 2 cents
- Best gym I've trained at so far, hands down. No shortage of experienced, storied Krus (all Thai, many former regional champs and some world) who will take time to work with you on technique, especially during pad work and clinching. While you'll find that at many gyms in Thailand, the thing I loved most was the wide variety of people in my height and weight range (a half dozen or so) to spar with, which is a rare treat for me at 6'3, 235lbs. Rawai makes for a good place to just focus on training since it's not much of a big party town, and you still have access to great beaches and good food (though I think Koh Samui might be more my style personally). Made some good friends at the gym that I'll continue to stay in touch with. Felt very well-prepared for fights and saw a lot of improvements in technique and fight IQ quickly. Would definitely train there again and recommend to anyone else thinking about making the trip.
- This gym is probably best for... People with 1-5 years of experience or less than 10 fights who are in relatively good shape and want to significantly step up their training. Probably the best training you could ask for outside of going all in as a professional fighter and joining a fight team out here -- and still many pro fighters base parts of their training camp at Sinbi, which says a lot.
- This gym probably the worst for... People who are out of shape, people who feel overwhelmed being around a lot of other people, people hoping to train alongside Thai fighters vs just being coached by them, or people who are competing strictly K1-- they're the only ones I've heard complain about the training because the pad work is very MT-oriented (heavy elbow, knee & kick combos) vs. K1-style (heavy boxing & kick combos) and they don't have any use for the clinch work.
