Are training sessions mostly self-guided, uniform, or choose your own adventure
Uniform... everyone follows the same programming from beginning to end (though, if you're training for a fight and look pretty decent, they might throw you into a few of their sponsored fight team sessions -- invite only). Sessions typically alternate between clinching, partner drills and sparring after pad and bag work each session.
Quality of Facility (1-10 scale)
To be fair, Powerhouse is undergoing a big gym renovation soon, so this review will be irrelevant in a couple of months. What I will say is that they have a good variety of bags, have plenty of extra gear for you to use (gloves, wraps, shinnies, etc) in good condition, and had accommodations on prem. In its current form, I would have graded the facility a 6 out of 10, but I suspect when the renovations are complete, it'll be closer to an 8 out of 10.
Your 2 cents
- Very solid gym with good mix of Thai & farang Krus who've fought at highest levels (RWS, Glory, etc). Style of training is a little more western -- very Muay Mat & K1 friendly -- but par for the course with most gyms in Phuket. Got a lot of personal attention on pads and clinch and they could explain things to me at a deeper level since many of the coaches are either fluent or native English speakers. Great to have in your corner for a fight. Get a little bit more of a family vibe there since the gym is smaller and many people training their are also living there. Rawai makes for a good place to just focus on training since it's not much of a big party town, and you still have access to great beaches and good food (though I think Koh Samui might be more my style personally). Made some good friends at the gym that I'll continue to stay in touch with. Felt very well-prepared for fights and saw a lot of improvements in technique and fight IQ quickly. Only real complaint is that I wish we stretched as a group a little more and class rain 2 hours instead of 90 minutes.
- This gym is probably best for... People with 1-2 years of experience, have 3 fights or less, are just coming back to training after some lay off, want more boxing or K-1 friendly drilling incorporated into their training, have a strong preference for English fluency, like grittier gyms with coaches that will push you but still know how to joke & laugh during training.
- This gym is probably the worst for... People who are on the more advanced side of intermediate -- that is, if you trained with pros or accomplished amateurs back home, you might find yourself stuck on the higher end of skill level in the intermediate class where you're better than most or all of the people there but either not good enough or not staying long enough to join the invite-only fight team training. You'll still grow and learn a lot as a practitioner, but you might not feel as if you're testing yourself as much as you could be in terms of intensity and sparring (I have a personal bias towards gyms with 5 rounds of pads every session).
